Cafe Review: Sophie Mon Petit Cafe

After a solid rock-climbing session at our climbing gym, we hit up Sophie Mon Petit Café in Leslieville for some brunch. My sister, Sophie, was in town and we thought we’d check out the café for fun. When it first opened a couple months back it looked empty every time we walked by, but that wasn’t the case today. The place was packed, and we were told we’d have to wait 5 to 10 minutes for a table to free up. We were in no rush, so we waited. Two minutes later, they asked a couple to move from a large table to a smaller one to make room for our party of 5. It was a nice gesture and a sign of things to come. For the next 90 minutes, we received top notch service.

We were late for brunch, but they allowed us to order from the breakfast menu.

I ordered waffles but was hoping for more maple syrup. Not a minute later, our server arrived with some additional maple syrup. She managed to catch my comment while attending to the rest of the restaurant – pretty impressive.

When my sister asked for a bowl of fresh fruits, which are not on the menu, the server gladly got the kitchen to whip something up.

No fuss.

The service was a refreshing change from the snarky attitude we got from Bonjour Brioche 30 minutes earlier when we simply tried to get the server’s attention to inquire about seating/wait times. It was with that reception that we decided to go to Sophie’s. It’s too bad, we’ve been loyal Bonjour Brioche customers for years, but quite frankly, we can make do without. Sophie Mon Petit Café offers delicious food, great service, and a comfortable space.

Everyone enjoyed their meal. Both my wife and my sister ordered the St-Viateur bagel with scrambled egg and swiss cheese. They devoured it just as quickly our friends downed the quiche loraine. Though my waffles were a tad dry and were supposed to be topped with a berry coulis (they ran out and had to top the waffles with fresh fruit), I didn’t mind: the service more than made up for it.

Next time you’re in Leslieville, skip Bonjour Brioche and give Sophie’s a try.
