When I was in New York City last week, my wife informed me that Pico was all boarded up. I told her that I saw a sign in their window a couple weeks back announcing that they’d be making some renos to the kitchen. But as I walked passed the restaurant this afternoon and saw that there was no sign explaining why the windows were covered up, I decided to call the number and got a message saying that “due to circumstances outside of our control, Pico is now closed.”
It’s always sad to see a neighbourhood favourite shut its doors. We used to go a lot and enjoyed Chef Frank and his cooking. I don’t know why the business failed, but perhaps stinging reviews like the one the Globe and Mail published in the fall, combined with a desire to focus on lunch and brunch did them in. Recently my wife and I were there for dinner on a Friday night and a party of three was turned around at 8:45pm because the the restaurant was “preparing to close for the night” and encouraged the patrons to go to Veritas instead.
It’s too bad. We enjoyed it, and I know we weren’t alone.
